Frequently Asked Questions

OHIO CONCEALED HOLDER'S LICENSE EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
In order to apply for a CHL, the State of Ohio requires the following:

  • A Certified Class - at least 8 hours in length - that covers:
    • The ability to name, explain, and demonstrate the rules for safe handling of a handgun and proper storage practices for handguns and ammunition
    • The ability to demonstrate and explain how to handle ammunition in a safe manner
    • The ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to shoot a handgun in a safe manner
    • Gun-handling training
    • At least two hours of in-person training that includes range time and live-fire experience
    • The applicant also must complete a written examination to test competency

I AM A VETERAN. DOES THIS MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING AN OHIO CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSE?"
It does. There are special considerations for vets, so please read this ENTIRE section.

  • Some military members - generally combat arms jobs - are NOT REQUIRED to take a CHL class in order to get their license.
  • Your application and renewal fees WILL BE WAIVED until the state of Ohio has reached its cap of $1.5million/year in waiver grants - then everyone has to pay as normal.
  • B&B Tactical still HIGHLY recommends you take a CHL class as a DD-214 doesn't give you any understanding of the law or information on practical concealed carry.
  • Ohio Laws re: concealed carry and self-defense aren't necessarily clearly written - and some seem to conflict - so it would be to your advantage to have someone walk you through what they really mean. Additionally, the variables make application of the laws fairly complex and nuanced.

"ARE THERE THINGS THAT WILL DISQUALIFY ME FROM BEING ABLE TO GET A CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSE?"
You betcha. The State of Ohio will NOT give you a CHL if you:

  • Have had a concealed carry license issued by another state suspended
  • If you live in another state and do NOT work in Ohio (proof is required)
  • Are an unlawful user of, or addicted to any controlled substance
  • Can't have been discharged from any branch of the military under dishonorable conditions
  • Have pleaded guilty, been convicted or adjudicated of any felony
  • Have pleaded guilty, been convicted or adjudicated of domestic violence
  • Have pleaded guilty, been convicted or adjudicated for drug trafficking
  • Have pleaded guilty, been convicted or adjudicated for crimes against children
  • Have 2 or more assaults or negligent assaults in the previous 5 years
  • Have pleaded guilty, been convicted or adjudicated of resisting arrest in the previous 10 years
  • Have been adjudicated as a mental defective
  • Subject to a civil protection order or a temporary protection order

"THE IDEA OF CARRYING OR SHOOTING A GUN IS INTIMIDATING-or-WHAT IF I'VE NEVER FIRED A GUN-or-WHAT IF I AM A BEGINNER SHOOTER?"
No problem.
You'd be surprised at the percentage of each class that fits into these categories. To address this, B&B Tactical gives a broad but complete overview of the operation of various types of guns; basic stance, grip, aiming and firing instruction (including student practice) and guidance on how to choose the right gun for YOU. While this may be remedial for experienced shooters, it is critical information for beginners. Understanding how your firearm works - and how to use it - is essential for the safe, effective use of your gun.

B&B Tactical thinks of it this way: "You can read a manual explaining how to drive a car, but until you're behind the wheel, you will have no sense of what stepping on a gas pedal actually does."

"WHAT IF I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO HANDLE AND USE A GUN BUT I'M NOT READY FOR A CCW CLASS?"
We've got you covered.
In our list of Training/Classes, we offer the NRA New Shooter Seminar for new shooters and their families. This class takes 60-90 minutes and can be given online before we meet at the range and walk through the handling and firing of guns to get students acclimated.

"WHAT IF I DON'T OWN A GUN? SHOULD I BUY ONE BEFORE I TAKE A CONCEALED CARRY CLASS?"
Great question.
If you are not already a gun owner, we recommend that you spend the extra $25 in our class to rent a pistol with ammunition. We propose this as we hate to see our students rush out and spend $500 - or more -on a handgun that won't fit their lifestyle, is too big (or small) in size or caliber to be effective or simply cannot be handled safely and fired accurately. We appreciate well-meaning friends and relatives giving you advice on what to buy, but do you really know WHY you are following their direction? In our class, we give you all of the information you need to make a smart purchase that works for your concealed-carry needs.

*If time permits during the live-fire portion of the class, B&B Tactical will supply our students who rent a .22 pistol with ammunition with a larger pistol and a few rounds of ammo to test fire so that you can experience the differences in size, weight, recoil and accuracy.

"I'M NERVOUS ABOUT TAKING A FIREARMS CLASS BY MYSELF"
Yep. We see this a lot, too. Confidence is a critical ingredient to being a safe user of guns. Whether we are teaching CCW students or introduction to firearms,  we have designed our classes to be SAFETY FIRST in orientation with the ability to have someone on our team spend as much one-on-one time with our students as needed.

"I'M ALREADY AN EXPERIENCED SHOOTER - DO I REALLY NEED ALL OF THE BASIC INSTRUCTION INCLUDED IN A CCW CLASS?"

We love having fellow shooters in our class and employ some drills into our class that you can't generally do on your own at the range (it's kind of difficult to practice the Tueller Drill when you have both hands on your gun). So, we're not only giving you the information that the State REQUIRES in order to get your CHL, we're also giving you a clear understanding of the legal and practical side of being a CHL holder. Think of it this way: Professional baseball players still take batting practice, so why wouldn't you take the time to practice and reinforce safety and shooting fundamentals any chance you get?

"MY CHURCH / WORK TEAM / SOCIAL CLUB WANTS TO TAKE A FIREARMS CLASS AS A GROUP  CLASS - CAN YOU DO THIS?"
Absolutely.
We've done this many times. Call/text us directly at 419-463-9132 and we'll be happy to work out a plan for your private group.
